Job Description:

Instructors are required to obtain and maintain Course Unique Instructor Training (CUIT) certification. They must also maintain qualifications for Navy Swim Testers/Lifeguards/CPR Instructors and conduct Second Class Swimmer tests for Master-at-Arms students. Additionally, they deliver CPR training and other non-weapons based training. Responsibilities include administrative screening, administering swim tests, conducting safety checks, and performing lifeguard duties. They grade students and document results in FLTMPS. They also coordinate pool usage and assist with CPR instruction and non-weapons training for MA “A” students after obtaining CUIT qualifications. 

Qualifications:

  • Possess Navy NEC 805A (Instructor) (or equivalency)
  • Possess one (or more) of the following qualifications::
    • Navy NEC 806A (9504) (Naval Aviation Water Survival Instructor); or
    • Navy NEC 808A (9510) (Navy Swimming and Water Survival Instructor); or
    • Completion of Navy Swim Tester Course (A-012-0015)
  • Possess current certification as a lifeguard. Lifeguard certification requires one of the following:
    • Completion of one of the following courses of instruction:
      • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training; or
      • YMCA Lifeguard Training; or
      • Ellis and Associates Water Park Training; or Possession of one of the following military qualifications:
        • Navy NEC 801A (Navy Rescue Swimmer – Surface)
        • Navy NEC O26A (Special Warfare Operator (SEAL))
        • Navy NEC 840A (Navy Scuba Diver)
        • Navy NEC O50A (Special Warfare Boat Operator (SB) Candidate)
        • Navy NEC O52A (Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman (SWCC))
        • Navy NEC G02A (Helicopter Search and Rescue Aircrew Swimmer)
        • Navy NEC 806A (Aviation Water Survival Instructor)
        • Navy NEC 808A (Basic Swimming and Water Survival Instructor)
        • USMC MOS 0918 (Water Safety/Survival Instructor)
        • Possess current certification in Tier 2 Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)
  • Possess current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Possess current certification as a CPR Instructor Certification
  • Possess a basic understanding of Military/Civilian Security Force techniques.
  • Be qualified as a small arms weapons instructor.
  • Have 2 years of experience as an instructor delivering training.
  • Have attended the Navy Instructor Training Course (NITC) (A-012-0077) (or military service or civilian equivalent), or Academic credentialing (teacher/professor), or Instructor training via an academic institution. Academic ITC requirements should contain at a minimum 24-semester credit or quarter hours in the following:
    • Effective communication and questioning techniques
    • Adult learning theory and principles
    • Instructional Delivery methods
    • Lesson delivery performance laboratory
    • Training environment management
    • Inter-personal skills
    • Evaluation and Feedback
  • Have knowledge of basic and advanced training techniques to include classroom management, Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs), and student motivation.
  • Have knowledge of computer technology application as it applies to instructional presentation.
  • Possess high personal standards of technical knowledge and professional competence in delivering training material. Possess the ability to perform in a military environment.
  • Possess a familiarity with the organization and hierarchy of the U. S. Navy, military rank/grade structure.
  • Possess a knowledge of Navy and military terminology, and shipboard/installation environments and configurations.
  • Possess an excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to obtain a Favorable Tier 3 Background Investigation
  • Possess at least two years of past military experience in a weapons-carrying and employment operational environment or equivalent experience as a Law Enforcement officer with a military or civilian security force
  • Possess a basic understanding of Military/Civilian Security Force techniques

 Additional Qualifications:

  • Must be capable of performing all training evolutions to include all self-defense, tactical and dynamic maneuvers per the testing plan; including the ability to effectively complete weapons qualifications in the standing, kneeling and prone positions; ascend or descend ladders and go through narrow passageways; be free of any abnormal fear of heights and be able to acclimate to extreme local environmental conditions (e.g., high heat, humidity).
  • Shall undergo medical screening prior to commencing instructor duties as mandated by OPNAVINST 1500.75.
  • Shall undergo a psychological screening prior to commencing instructor duties as mandated by OPNAVINST 1500.75.
  • Required to be Arms, Ammunition, and Explosive screened per OPNAVINST 5530.13D within thirty (30) days.
